The Western cultures are more resistant to baring of belly button. Apart from when in a bikini, wearing clothes that expose your navel in public has long been a taboo. In the 1960s, Barbara Eden was not allowed to show her navel on the TV show I Dream of Jeannie. Even as recently as 1990s, country singer Shania Twain provoked hullabaloo when she bared her midriff in her music videos and performances in Nashville, Tennessee. However, with the belly dancing craze that crept into the Western societies in the 1980s, acceptance of navel display in public became more acceptable. Today, navel piercing among young women is no longer uncommon.
